Save Xmas From Going Down the Drain

December 8, 2004 -- Xmas could once again bring misery to thousands of home-owners if warnings from water companies are not listened to by those cooking the Xmas dinner. In 2003 thousands of households suffered from blocked drains caused by Turkey fat tipped down the sink that then solidified in the cold weather and clogged up pipes.
Thames Water alone estimates that the annual Yuletide feast of turkey, goose, beef and ham leads to a 25% increase in the amount of fat ending up down the drain. It says that about half the 100,000 blockages in public sewers are caused by fat around 100 tonnes of it annually.
The best way to dispose of Christmas cooking fat is to pour it into a sturdy container and put it out with the rubbish. Alternatively, it can be mixed with seeds and nuts and hung in the garden to provide extra winter nourishment for birds.
Anyone whos likely to forget their good intentions after a tipple or two should remember to add drain unblocker (too much fat in plughole) to their shopping list, along with paracetamol (too much wine) and indigestion pills (too much food).
Buster Kitchen Drain Clear is available from major retailers including Wilkinson's, Waitrose, John Lewis and independent hardware stores.
